Roof and Enclosure Rehabilitation at Gates Ave Substation
Zion Contracting served as the General Contractor for the Rehabilitation of Roof and Enclosure at Gates Avenue Ridgewood Substation in Brooklyn. Located in the bustling Ridgewood neighborhood, the Gates Avenue Substation plays a vital role in the electrical infrastructure supporting New York City’s subway system. This substation is critical for maintaining power to nearby transit lines, underscoring the importance of the project in ensuring operational reliability and safety for the broader transit network.
The project involved a comprehensive overhaul of the substation’s roofing system. This included the full removal and replacement of the existing roof, along with the installation of roof railings to enhance safety. Extensive surface cleaning and painting were conducted to improve durability and visual appeal. Structural upgrades included the removal and replacement of concrete coping and decorative cornices, as well as the removal, replacement, and repointing of deteriorated brickwork to restore the building’s integrity and weather resistance. The roof slab was upgraded, and critical steel repairs were completed to reinforce structural stability.
Mechanical improvements involved the removal and replacement of exhaust fans, dampers, and associated control systems, ensuring efficient ventilation and climate control within the substation. Additionally, roof drains were removed and replaced to improve water management and protect the structure from potential water damage. Electrical and power work was also conducted to integrate these systems seamlessly into the substation’s operations, ensuring that the Gates Avenue Ridgewood Substation remains a robust, reliable facility within the MTA’s infrastructure.
