Zion Contracting served as the General Contractor for the extensive rehabilitation of the Far Rockaway Bus Depot, a critical transit facility located at 49-19 Rockaway Beach Boulevard, at the intersection of Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Beach 49th Street in the Arverne/Edgemere neighborhood on the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens. The depot, which comprises two storage lots and a small maintenance facility, sustained significant damage from Hurricane Sandy, leading to its closure from October 2012 to February 2013. During this period, its fleet was temporarily relocated to Building 78 at John F. Kennedy International Airport, near the JFK Depot. The primary goal of this rehabilitation project was to fortify the facility against future environmental threats, repair damaged structures, expand the depot with additional facilities, and reconstruct its parking lots to better support operations.

The scope of work was comprehensive, addressing both structural and operational requirements to fully modernize the depot. Major tasks included the replacement and relocation of interior office spaces, support areas, and exterior walls that were compromised by the storm. Construction work involved complex coordination across multiple trades: general construction, masonry, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and carpentry. New one-story transportation and maintenance offices, restrooms, locker rooms, and swing rooms were built to support the facility’s growing operational demands. Additional critical work included the demolition and replacement of large sections of the facility’s concrete floor slab, installation of updated exterior window systems with storefront designs, and the integration of flood-mitigating sheet piles along the property to enhance resilience against future storms. The project also involved resurfacing the parking lot with reinforced pavement to support off-shift bus parking. Fire protection and advanced communication systems were installed throughout the facility, ensuring that it meets modern safety and operational standards. Zion Contracting’s expertise in multi-disciplinary coordination was essential to successfully delivering this complex rehabilitation, positioning the Far Rockaway Bus Depot to better serve the transit system for years to come.
