Circuit Breaker Houses 207/208 & 209 Rehabilitation

Zion Contracting served as the General Contractor for the comprehensive rehabilitation of Circuit Breaker Houses (CBH) 207, 208, and 209, located within the Westchester Maintenance Yard Facility, commonly known as the Pelham Yard. This strategically critical facility, located in the Bronx, comprises 45 layup tracks and operates as a central hub for both storage and maintenance. It accommodates R62A trains servicing the 6 line, along with Maintenance of Way diesel trains essential for both the A and B Divisions. The yard’s integration with the IRT Pelham Line allows for operational flexibility, with connections in both directions between the Westchester Square–East Tremont Avenue and Middletown Road stations.

The purpose of this complex project was to undertake an extensive rehabilitation of the circuit breaker houses, which had incurred substantial structural and functional damage during Superstorm Sandy. This multifaceted restoration required the installation of high-performance, weather-resistant roofing systems, tailored to protect sensitive electrical equipment from future environmental threats. In the cellars, advanced waterproofing solutions were employed, incorporating specialized sealing compounds and drainage systems to ensure structural integrity and prevent moisture intrusion. Electrical work was intensive, involving both the repair and replacement of critical circuit components to restore operational continuity, alongside enhancements to meet modern standards for resilience and efficiency. Structural reinforcement required the precise installation of heavy-duty steel supports to bolster the building’s load-bearing capacity, while concrete repairs addressed extensive spalling and cracking, using industrial-grade materials for long-term durability. The project was completed with a comprehensive application of protective coatings and industrial paint, reinforcing both the exterior and interior of each CBH to safeguard against corrosion and extend the life of the infrastructure.
