Circuit Breaker Houses 206 & 212 Rehabilitation

Zion Contracting served as the General Contractor for the extensive rehabilitation of Circuit Breaker Houses (CBH) 207, 208, and 209, located at two critical MTA facilities: the Westchester Maintenance Yard (Pelham Yard) and the 239th Street Yard. The Westchester Yard, also known as Pelham Yard, is a strategically important facility in the Bronx, comprising 45 layup tracks. It serves not only as a maintenance and storage site for the R62A trains on the 6 line but also accommodates Maintenance of Way diesel trains supporting both the A and B Divisions. This complex yard connects to the IRT Pelham Line in both directions between the Westchester Square–East Tremont Avenue and Middletown Road stations, ensuring seamless operations within the rail network. The 239th Street Yard, positioned at 4570 Furman Avenue in the Wakefield area of the North Bronx, stands as the northernmost rail yard and serves as a key storage and maintenance facility for the R142 trains assigned to the 2 line.

The purpose of the project was to fully rehabilitate these essential circuit breaker houses, which suffered substantial damage during Superstorm Sandy. This intricate scope of work included installing advanced roofing systems on each CBH, incorporating reinforced weatherproofing measures designed to withstand extreme conditions. Extensive waterproofing operations were conducted in the cellars to prevent future water ingress, ensuring long-term structural stability. The electrical scope required precise repairs and replacements of critical equipment to restore operational capacity, along with upgrades to existing systems to meet modern standards. Structural reinforcements involved specialized steelwork designed to enhance load-bearing capacity, along with comprehensive concrete repairs tailored to address both surface and deep-seated structural damage. The project concluded with a full repainting and corrosion-protection coating to safeguard the facilities, reflecting Zion Contracting’s commitment to delivering resilient, high-quality infrastructure restoration.
